This is the long-form version of everything on this site: what each spec actually means for how a robot vacuum performs in a real home, not just on a spec sheet. If you only read one page before buying, read this one.
Every robot vacuum on the market today combines four systems: a drive base with wheels and drop sensors, a cleaning head (a spinning brushroll plus side brush, sometimes with a mop attachment), a navigation system that builds a map of your home, and a dock that charges it and, on most current models, empties its dustbin. The navigation system is what has changed the most in the last few years — early robot vacuums bounced off walls randomly, while every model in our current lineup builds an actual map and cleans it in organized passes.
Pascals (Pa) measure the vacuum motor's static suction pressure, and manufacturers love printing a big Pa number because it's easy to compare at a glance. The problem: Pa is measured differently by different manufacturers, under different test conditions, and it says nothing about airflow, brush design, or how well the robot actually reaches the dirt in the first place. A robot with mediocre Pa but a well-designed brushroll and good edge-cleaning can outperform a higher-Pa robot with a poor brush design on real carpet. That's why our own Cleaning Performance score factors in navigation and obstacle-avoidance sophistication alongside suction, rather than ranking by Pa alone.
LiDAR (a spinning laser turret, sometimes called LDS) measures distances to build a precise 2D map and is now the baseline on nearly every capable robot vacuum. Camera-based navigation adds visual recognition — an RGB camera (sometimes paired with an AI chip) that can identify specific objects like shoes, cords, or pet waste, not just "something is there." Increasingly, the best current models combine both: LiDAR for precise mapping, plus a camera and/or 3D structured light for object recognition. Neither is strictly "better" in isolation — LiDAR alone is reliable and mature; a camera adds real intelligence about what it's avoiding, at the cost of needing decent lighting and raising the privacy questions covered below.
This is distinct from navigation/mapping. A robot can map your home perfectly with LiDAR and still drive straight into a phone charger cable, because avoiding a specific small object in real time is a different, harder problem than knowing where the walls are. Look specifically for language about object recognition (cords, socks, pet waste) rather than just "avoids obstacles," which can mean nothing more than a bump sensor and a LiDAR wall-map.
A vacuum-and-mop combo cleans hard floors and carpet in one pass, automatically detecting and avoiding mopping over rugs. It's genuinely convenient if you have significant hard flooring, but it adds cost, moving parts, and — depending on the dock — real maintenance (see mop washing below). If your home is mostly carpeted, a vacuum-only robot is simpler, usually cheaper, and has one less thing to break.
Mopping tech ranges widely: a static microfiber pad that just drags across the floor (basic, needs hand-washing), a vibrating or sonic pad that scrubs in place (better on light dirt), and dual spinning pads that rotate against the floor under downward pressure (the most effective at real scrubbing, similar to a buffer). The spinning-pad designs are generally the most effective at lifting dried-on messes, but check whether the dock also washes them — a spinning mop you have to unclip and rinse by hand every day gets old fast.
A self-emptying dock sucks the dustbin's contents into a bag or bin at the base after each cleaning run, extending the time between manual dust-bin trips from days to weeks or months. This is one of the highest-impact convenience features on this list — it's the difference between "empty a dustbin every other day" and "replace a bag every couple of months."
The most advanced docks go further: emptying dust, refilling the mop's water tank, washing the mop pads, and drying them (with air or heat) automatically. For a vacuum-and-mop combo, this is what actually delivers on the "hands-off" promise — without it, you're still manually washing mop pads and refilling water even if the dustbin empties itself.
Washing removes dirt from the pad between passes so you're not re-spreading grime across the floor. Drying matters more than it sounds: a mop pad left wet in a dock for days can start to smell, and heated drying (versus just air drying) addresses that faster. If daily mopping is a priority for you, prioritize a dock that both washes and heat-dries.
Look for two specific things: an automatic suction boost when the robot detects carpet (rather than running the same suction everywhere), and — for combo models — reliable automatic mop-lifting so the robot doesn't drag a wet pad across your rugs. Thick, high-pile carpet remains the hardest surface for any robot vacuum; if that's most of your home, weigh reviews and suction class more heavily than for a mostly-hardwood home.
Hardwood is the easiest surface for a robot vacuum in terms of pickup, but fine dust and hair can skitter across smooth floors instead of being picked up. A well-designed brushroll and decent edge-cleaning matter more here than raw suction. Pet hair is the single biggest cause of robot-vacuum maintenance headaches: wrapped brushrolls, clogged intake ports, and suction that quietly degrades over weeks as hair builds up. Anti-tangle brush designs — from a simple anti-tangle side brush up to dual-brush "zero-tangle" systems with lateral airflow channels — are specifically engineered to keep hair moving into the dustbin instead of wrapping around the roller. If you have pets, this matters more than almost any other single spec.
Runtime is usually quoted at the lowest suction setting, on hard flooring, in a straight line — real-world runtime on carpet at higher suction will be shorter. Most current robots automatically return to the dock to recharge and resume cleaning where they left off if the battery runs low mid-clean, so a shorter runtime matters less than it used to for very large homes.
If you live in a multi-story home, confirm the robot can store and switch between multiple saved maps (most capable current models support 3-5). Without this, carrying the robot between floors means it has to re-map the space it's in every time, which slows down cleaning and can produce less efficient routes.
Most current models work with their own dedicated app at minimum. Broader voice/smart-home support (Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple Home, or Matter) varies significantly by model and isn't universal — we note exactly what's confirmed for each product in its own review rather than assuming compatibility, since several manufacturers only document their own app and don't confirm third-party integration.
A robot vacuum's ongoing cost doesn't stop at the purchase price. Self-emptying docks need replacement dust bags. HEPA-style filters need periodic replacement for suction and allergen performance to stay consistent. Brushrolls and side brushes wear out and eventually need replacing, especially in pet households. Mop pads on combo models wear down with repeated washing. None of this is unusual for the category, but budget for it — check a manufacturer's own accessories page for real replacement-part pricing before buying, since we don't track live consumables pricing on this site.
A robot vacuum with an onboard camera is, functionally, a mobile camera that maps the inside of your home. If that matters to you: check whether the manufacturer processes images on-device or in the cloud, what its data-retention policy says, and whether you can disable the camera/AI features while keeping basic LiDAR navigation. We report what each manufacturer's product page says about navigation hardware, but we have not independently audited any manufacturer's data-handling practices — read the manufacturer's own privacy policy for that model before buying if this is a priority for you.
Based on what actually changes day-to-day ownership, in roughly descending order of impact: (1) a self-emptying dock, because it changes weekly maintenance into monthly or longer; (2) real anti-tangle brush design, if you have pets or long hair in the household; (3) an all-in-one dock, if you also want mopping; (4) camera-based obstacle avoidance, if your floors are genuinely cluttered; (5) higher suction, which matters most specifically for thick carpet. A bigger Pa number by itself, on an otherwise basic robot, is the feature we'd deprioritize first.
Budget models in our lineup are typically vacuum-only or basic combos with a dust-only auto-empty dock — a sound choice if you want dependable cleaning without extras. Mid-range models add real mopping automation (auto-empty plus some mop washing) and stronger obstacle avoidance. Premium/flagship models add all-in-one docks, camera-plus-LiDAR navigation, and in one case in our lineup, physical obstacle-climbing legs. Match the tier to which features from the list above you'd actually use — paying flagship prices for features you won't use (e.g., camera-based pet-waste avoidance in a pet-free, low-clutter home) is the most common overspend we see.
